Small Business – Dealing With Increasing Competition

A healthy economy is an economy where competition and free trade exist without restriction, regulation and with the minimal interference from State and its regulatory bodies.
Economist’s demand that free trade must exist and the economy left to the forces of supply and demand, all noble and well intended if you are not on the receiving or bankrupt end of the supply and demand curve.
Competition in all economies is very healthy and stimulates the economy and its consumerism activities; the consumer is making the final choice through their purchase decision, as a small business owner it is imperative that the consumer buying decision remains with your business outlet.
Price is the minor criteria on a consumers mind when making a purchase, so price wars are not the route to ponder when faced with competition, consumer’s rate “trust” as the most critical criteria when making a purchase decision.
Service Standards
Business enterprises that offer the same or similar products have only one discernible difference that they can offer the consumer, the quality of their customer service, the engagement, compassion, empathy, professionalism, and friendliness found in their service. Train your frontline personnel at least quarterly on customer service and communication techniques. If it is the only value-add to your product, it is then, a matter of life and death for your business.
Customer is King, Engage the Customer
The environment we create in our business is it an environment where the customer is king? Business owners are, loathe to create “kingdoms” for their customer, ergonomics, ambience, design, lighting and flows play the most important role in creating a kingdom for your customer using your premises.
Communication
Are we communicating with our customer?
Entrepreneurs who focus inwards will always answer yes; yet, the communication chain has many links to it in the communication process.
An example of communication links are;
1. Prices clearly displayed
2. Telephone number clearly visible and legible
3. All marketing media correctly laid out using AIDA principles and inviting the consumer to the business.
4. In store promotion, visible professional and informative
5. Is the marketing message contiguous with the product and service quality?
6. Guarantees in place, consumers choose peace of mind before price.
7. Regular updates via e-mail, SMS or information brochures, and pamphlets are important to the consumer.
8. Do not sell mud as chocolate the consumer has a sound knowledge base and education with a large range of consumer products.
9. Be honest, candid, and original in your communication.
Productivity
Check productivity level optimization for your business at least quarterly, the fundamental equation for productivity is output divided by input. One cannot compete with your productivity levels higher than the national average or your industry standard.
Complete Package
Dealing with competition requires that an entrepreneur participate on all levels with the customer engagement and experience criteria.
Look at your business, as a consumer would, never be complacent, add value to the consumers experience and life. Make friends with your customers they will eventually become like family.

Small Business Owners: 10 Delegating and Networking Tips

It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know….. In today’s global economy it takes both. One must be able to navigate through chaos of personal challenges and market changes to achieve their dreams. Below are some ‘lessons learned’ I picked up from ‘tailgate sessions’ with my team from stumbling as a business owner.
1- Acknowledge your own limitations to achieve your dream
a. Admitting your own limitations actually frees your mind to pursue the remedy and motivate others to assist you.
2- Make a checklist of Others’ Specific Responsibilities.
a. Avoid verbal instructions. Provide a written list of tasks to be accomplished.
3- Clarify your Expectations of your team
a. Confusion paralyzes. It neutralizes the flow of energy.
4- Provide Information and Authority Necessary to Complete Those Tasks
a. Inform others regarding the Chain of Authority. Identify openly who is authorized to instruct and who is expected to obey.
5- Establish Agreeable Deadlines to Complete the Tasks and Projects
a. Written plans unlock confidence in time lines and projected dates of completion
6- Invest Time in Collaborative Conversation
a. This will bring team into harmony towards achieving a common goal
7- Remind Others of Their Rewards for their Efforts.
a. Always reward those who solve problems for you. Make the time to motivate and educate them as to your exact expectations.
8- Join Professional Associations that will help you achieve your dreams
a. The successful person associates with those who support his dream. Life is a collection of relationships and those relationships compensate for what you do not have. Never underestimate the importance of people. Winners are people who have discovered their special talents, abilities, and their gifts to the world.
9- Pursue Mentoring opportunities and Training
a. Who has done what you want to do? Schedule appointments with them. Ask them to tell you what important questions you should be asking yourself, actions to take to achieve your dreams.
10-How you dress and conduct yourself (protocol matters)
a. Every environment requires a code of conduct for entering and remaining in it. How you dress and conduct yourself determines if you get future invitations.
In the Bible, Solomon, the wisest king, knew he could never achieve a significant project without the involvement of people. There’s a story about GOD asking Solomon what do you want from me, Solomon answered being a wise king, WISDOM to lead and discernment to place people in the right position to work in his kingdom. As a business owner, do you love your business enough to help employees identify their ‘natural talent’, then place them in the right position to help you, have you found ways to reward them that they feel valued by the organization, and have you as a manager spent time with them to understand the unique circumstances and challenges they are facing (don’t fix the problem, guide them to a website or agency that can help). Remember, you can undermine your leadership by gossiping or betraying 1 employees trust.
If there is a golden rule in business success it would have to be linked to a happy workforce works harder to keep the customer satisfied and coming back for future purchases.
A good owner knows that his leadership skills and networking ability is key to his company success.

Writing a Business Plan: A Step-By-Step Guide

Writing a business plan is one of the most important actions an entrepreneur can take. It is your elevator pitch, an overview of your business, and an exercise in preparedness, forcing you to consider every aspect of starting a business — both large and small, from your management team to your electrical company — so that your business is in a strong position to hit the ground running.
Since formats of business plans can (and should) vary by industry, you should take a look at more specifically relevant examples when writing a business plan. Below is a standard business plan structure, including directions on creating your own. Good luck!
1. Executive Summary
The executive summary is just as it sounds: a summary, or abstract, of the rest of the plan. For this reason typically completed last, the executive summary will be the equivalent of your investor pitch, giving any potential lenders or investors a good idea of what your business is all about, what your goals are, and how you plan to get there.
2. Organizational Structure
Another obvious one, the organizational structure section will provide an overview of your business structure and operations. Is your business a corporation? Partnership? LLC? If an LLC, will it be managed by managers, or managing members? Do you have directions? In what state will you register your business? Will you work with affiliate partnerships or outside vendors and suppliers, or will you create everything in-house?
3. Industry Analysis
To be successful in an industry, you must understand where your business fits into it. Paint a detailed picture of the industry and its future potential. In which areas is it likely to grow? What areas rely on technology likely to drop out of commercial use?
4. Services and Products
From the previous section, you should have a good idea of what your business has to offer to the industry. Be specific about exactly what it is you do, expanding on anything mentioned in the executive summary clearly for your potential investors.
5. Market Analysis and Marketing Plan
Now, go into detail on how, specifically, you will enter your services into the market defined by your industry. Define your target market. What else do they buy? Where to they buy it? How much money do they have? Conduct a market analysis and really think about how you’re going to reach them.
6. Strategic Plan
This section will outline the “boring” parts of running your business: are you leasing office space? Where will you get your electricity? Your water? This section describes the nuts and bolts of the business.
7. Management Team
This section will describe the specific duties of your key staff: the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Directors, CEO, CFO, and any other corporate titles. You should list the name and address of each officer, as well as their percentage of ownership in the company.
8. Financial Analysis and Financial Plan
Based on the information above, come up with a realistic number for your overhead expenses; many advisors also recommend including three years of financial projections so that you can be prepared.
A business plan is like a blueprint, a road map for your business. Revisit it periodically, both to keep your business’s operations in check, and to update it if you decide that the winds of the industry warrant a shift in your services and plan of attack.

Our phrase was, “after Michael Jordan,” so we knew that if Clyde was your favorite, that meant your second favorite because MJ is everyone’s favorite. Your product or service has to be excellent to begin with or you must have an excellent angle to present it. Service
You have to provide great customer service. If you make it a point to be exceptional in your client services you will out do competitors based on the fact that you are just plain nicer than them. I do it all the time and my friends use to laugh at me especially when my money was low; I would go to a grocery store that was more expensive because they treated me better while in there. I could easily get 50 dollars worth of groceries 50 bucks at another store; instead I go and get 40 dollars worth for 50 bucks. I spent an extra $10 dollars just to treat me better. Some people call it crazy, but I call it being around people who have nice positive energy. The point is you too can win if you just treat your clients with exceptional service. This does not mean put up with grouchy customers; but treat clients like they are extremely special.
Application/Execution
Execution and great application is crucial small business tip number two. A lot of times we get lazy, unmotivated, unfocused and this is where things begin to separate the great businesses from the average businesses. You must have good application to be successful; you must be able to execute with preciseness and consistency. If you cannot you should hire or partner with someone who can. There are great basketball players in the NBA and around the world; the ones we hear about and know are the ones who can apply their skill the best and execute when it matters the most. Leverage
The last tip you need to truly understand is leverage; once you understand that you cannot do this yourself you will take off to another level. Michael Jordan is going into the basketball all-time great list because for so long he thought he could do it himself. He posted unheard of numbers; but it wasn’t until you let his cohorts take much of the load off of him that he really excelled at his winning craft. You must allow yourself to do the same; you must leverage yourself. If it will take you 10 days to build a solid website, hire someone who can do it in one day. If it will take away from productive time to get your local marketing going, hire good local marketing helpers to so that you stay productive. Decide right now how much your goals mean to you and if you can stand to continue living life as you currently know it. If your answer is no, the only other option is to commit to making it happen – no matter what.
